Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in 1962 (B.E. 2506) with Assistant Professor Ueam Anantasarn(ร.ศ.เอื้อม อนันตศานต์) as the Chairperson and only 3-4 department staff accompanying him. In the beginning, the role of the department was to provide the Architecture Department with courses regarding Urban Planning for the 3rd, 4th and 5th year students of the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program.
Early 1970, the department of Urban and Regional Planning has established a subcommittee to develop the course structure for students who obtained a Diploma in architecture, for further study in Bachelor degree with the intention to launch the course in the school year of 1972-1973 as the Bachelor of Architecture (City Planning)
The program was constantly revised and by 1971 the revised course syllabus was subject to constructing a new seceded program in City and Urban Planning as the 2-year program of Diploma in Urban and Regional planning will not provide sufficient knowledge for students to pursue urban planning professions. Thus, the committee then developed a 4-year program by which students shall study primarily on urban planning since year 1 and in recognition of the faculty of Architecture’s policies, to launch full 5 year Bachelors degree in Urban Planning, consequently developing the following programs:

  1. Bachelor of Architecture (City Planning)
  2. Bachelor of Urban Planning
  3. Master of Urban Planning

Whence a number of revisions, although the course syllabus for the undergraduate program was not approved except for the Graduate program in Urban Planning was approved, in accordance to the Chulalongkorn University Academic Developments program stage 4.
Therefore, the department of Urban Planning proceeds in the formulation of the curriculum and required staff whilst campaigning on admissions for the first school year of 1975. The approach to the prospectus is of an inter-disciplinary one with Assistant Professor Chumphol Surintraboon as the Chairperson. The admitted students of postgraduates where the course duration of 2 years with a total of 54 credits: 42 credits of graduate courses and 12 credits from the Thesis. The degree received is
Master of Urban Planning (abbr. M.U.P)
Being of a new curriculum, there were a number of improvements to be carried out both in the course structure and the lessons; hence, there were many modifications to better the program since then.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning currently offers 4 courses:

- Bachelor of Urban Planning Program in Urban Architecture
- Master of Urban and Regional Planning Program in Urban Design
- Master of Urban and Regional Planning Program in Urban and Regional Planning
- Doctor of Philosophy Program in Urban and Regional Planning
